Korean Names That Mean Wisdom

Wisdom is one of the qualities Korean families most love to wish onto a child, so it shows up again and again in names — through the Hanja and , and through a beautiful native word of its own. Here are five names that carry it.

1. 지혜 — Jihye

The most direct of all: written 智慧, it literally means "wisdom" — 智 ("wisdom, intellect") paired with 慧 ("bright, clever"). Warm, classic, and unmistakable in meaning.

2. 슬기 — Seulgi

The native Korean word for wisdom and wit. Where 지혜 is the Hanja route, 슬기 is the pure-Korean one — and it has a bright, friendly sound. Native Korean, no Hanja.

3. 예지 — Yeji

Written 睿智, this means deep wisdom or keen insight — 睿 ("farsighted, sagacious") with 智 ("wisdom"). It carries a sense of seeing clearly and thinking ahead.

4. 지 — Ji

The Hanja ("wisdom") is one of the most common building blocks in all of Korean naming. You will spot it inside names like Jiwoo, Jia, and Jihye — a little seed of wisdom tucked into each.

5. 혜 — Hye

The Hanja means "bright" and "intelligent." It often lands as the second syllable in wisdom-leaning names, adding a sense of quick, clear-eyed cleverness.

Of all the wishes a name can carry, wisdom is the one that quietly hopes the child will find their own way.
