Korean Names That Mean Ocean

For a peninsula ringed by water on three sides, it makes sense that the sea turns up in Korean names — usually through warm, native words rather than Hanja. Ocean names tend to feel open, calm, and a little adventurous. Here are five.

1. 바다 — Bada

The native Korean word for "sea" or "ocean," used directly as a name. It is wide-open and unisex, with a friendly, grounded sound. Native Korean, no Hanja.

2. 해 — Hae

The Hanja means "sea." One honest caveat: on its own, the native word 해 means "sun" — so this syllable only means "sea" when it is written with the character 海. Context, as always, is everything.

3. 물결 — Mulgyeol

A native word meaning "waves" or "ripples" — literally the patterning of water. As a name it is gentle and a little poetic, like sunlight scattered across a moving surface. Native Korean, no Hanja.

4. 너울 — Neoul

A native word for an ocean swell — the big, slow, rolling waves of open water. It has a calm, powerful feeling, like the sea breathing. Native Korean, no Hanja.

5. 푸름 — Pureum

A native name meaning "blueness" — the deep blue-green of open water and far horizons. Soft, cool, and serene. Native Korean, no Hanja.

The sea in Korean names is less about power and more about openness — room to breathe, and somewhere far to look.

Curious which Korean name matches your vibe? The quiz takes about a minute.
