Korean Names That Mean Moon

The moon has always had a soft hold on Korean imagination — from the full harvest moon of Chuseok to old folk songs about moonlight on a courtyard. In names, the moon tends to arrive through poetry and native words rather than one common syllable, which makes moon-themed names feel especially dreamy. Here are five that glow.

1. 보름 — Boreum

A native Korean name meaning "full moon" — specifically the bright, round moon of the fifteenth night. It carries a feeling of fullness and completeness, and it is wonderfully soft to say. Native Korean, no Hanja.

2. 달 — Dal

Simply "moon," the native Korean word. On its own it is gentle and poetic, and you will also hear the affectionate form 달님 (Dalnim), which is something like "dear moon." Native Korean, no Hanja.

3. 월 — Wol

The Hanja means "moon," read as 월 in Korean. It has a classical, literary feel and usually appears paired inside a two-syllable name rather than standing alone.

4. 은월 — Eunwol

A poetic pairing of ("silver") and ("moon") — a "silver moon." Luminous and a little mysterious, it reads like moonlight on water given a name.

5. 명 — Myeong

The Hanja means "bright" or "luminous," and the character itself pictures the sun and moon side by side. It is not "moon" in the literal sense, but it lends a moonlit brightness to the many names it appears in.

Moon names lean quiet and romantic — less about ranking high on a chart, more about how they make you feel. Want a name matched to your own vibe? The quiz takes about a minute.
